VOTE JASON CHERNOW FOR YOUR DISTRICT 6 CITIZENS' REPRESENTATIVE SEPTEMBER 17th!
I'm a strong believer in the power of gathering and the strength of a unified community. From the old Voyageur rendez-vous', to our Métis kitchen parties, and our many social gatherings, It's our family and social connections that keep our culture alive. Back in the settlement days, the Cree called us "Otipemisiwak", which roughly translates to "The people who own themselves". We earned this title because it is well known that we always take care of our own, and that we don't need to rely on outside help to keep our families and communities healthy and safe.
Our roots define us. My roots trace back to St. Boniface and the Selkirk Settlement. My Métis Family names include Jobin, Courtreille, Dumas, and Ferguson. I grew up learning about our history and engaging in our cultural practices. This includes our dances, beading, hunting, and fishing. I approach life through the lens of our Métis heritage and incorporate our traditional beliefs and practices into our modern lifestyles.
Through my many roles working with the MNA, and being mentored by some of our nations strongest leaders, combined with the discipline, initiative, and work ethic I learned as an NCO with the RCACC I have developed a strong sense of leadership and responsibility. I promise integrity, honesty, and transparency with every action I take.
Every opportunity is a learning opportunity. I see the true value and strength that can be created through the smart blending of our historic and traditional ways with our modern tech driven lifestyles. It's important that as a nation and as a culture we can continue to grow and develop while also staying true to our traditions and the values of all those that came before us.
The recent trend of mass inflation raising the cost of rent, groceries, utilities, and just about everything else has effected us all significantly. Data shows that Métis people are disproportionately affected by these price jumps. On of my main focuses if elected will be to work towards alleviating this rapid inflation and to develop support programs to help Métis Families make ends meet.
In 2019 The Métis Nation of Alberta made history by securing harvesting rights for its citizens through a new agreement with The Government of Alberta. Unfortunately, southern Alberta was left unrepresented in this agreement, leaving many Métis harvesters with no ability to to exercise their protected rights as indigenous people under sec.35 of the Constitution Act. If elected I promise to take steps to get The Otipemisiwak Métis Government and The Government of Alberta to sit back down at the negotiation table and create a new agreement that protects the harvesting rights of ALL Métis people across the whole province.
Access to an affordable and quality education is vital for our citizens, not just for our youth, but for adult students as well. Education is a very important issue to me, I will work hard to ensure our youth have access to smart and culturally relevant services to maximize the value of their education. I also believe that adults looking to further their education deserve access to resources to help them achieve their goals and ambitions. Through strong education services for Métis citizens of every age, we can ensure the long term prosperity of our culture and our nation.
It is the unfortunate reality that many aspects of our rich and vibrant Métis history and culture have become less widespread and ubiquitous with time. It is a priority of mine to change that. I am determined to work closely with the Calgary Board of Education to ensure that Métis culture and traditional practices are accurately represented in the curriculum. This doesn't just include our cultural crafts, dances, and customs, but also our rich history that was absolutely vital to the economic success of early Canada. In addition to working with our schools, I plan to create cultural resources for all the members of our district including cultural gatherings, workshops, and showcases.
Every Métis citizen deserves to have their voice heard and for their concerns to be addressed. I will fight to ensure that all the members of our District are equally represented on a provincial level. It's vital that our people's needs are fairly represented in policy making, developing programs and services, and all forms of governance.
It's my goal to make sure all citizens of District 6 feel heard and that their concerns are understood and are being addressed. Please send me an email with any comments, questions, or concerns you may have!
